Sign of Jonah (Matthew 12:38-42):
Context: “demon-oppressed man” (12:22-45)
Audience: ”An evil and adulterous generation” (12:39)
Christ: “greater than Jonah” (Solomon; the temple)
Jesus as New Israel?
More than the resurrection
Jesus is the righteous Israelite, who does everything correctly (not just fulfillment of prophecies)
Not just “more than Jonah,” but the new “Jonah”
The trial (death/resurrection) of the three days/nights is how Christ makes a new way for Israel, a new humanity
