The Use of the Old Testament in the New Testament, week 6

The Use of the Old Testament in the New Testament (this week taught by Ron Haydon)

Week 6: Jonah in Matthew 12

Sign of Jonah (Matthew 12:38-42):

  • Context: “demon-oppressed man” (12:22-45)

  • Audience: ”An evil and adulterous generation” (12:39)

  • Christ: “greater than Jonah” (Solomon; the temple)

Jesus as New Israel?

  • More than the resurrection

  • Jesus is the righteous Israelite, who does everything correctly (not just fulfillment of prophecies)

  • Not just “more than Jonah,” but the new “Jonah”

  • The trial (death/resurrection) of the three days/nights is how Christ makes a new way for Israel, a new humanity
