Micah Schuurman: Biblical Aesthetics, week 5
BIBLICAL AESTHETICS
How the Bible and Christian Faith teach us to see, hear, touch, taste, and smell differently
Review on Lament (e.g., Psalm 88):
The prevalence of lament psalms suggests that lament has a place in our corporate worship and fellowship.
Listening to someone discussing suffering: how do you discern between “grumbling in the wilderness” and faithful lament? Can you hear the faith in it? Does it occur in a context of trust of God? Or does it speak of wanting to “return to Egypt”?
Because God is so good & so powerful & yet suffering happens… we have such a need to lament.
Biblical Thanksgiving (e.g., Psalm 30):
A lament remembered
A sadness in the past tense
Sometimes it is hard to see/hear/tough God’s goodness
Ends with an invitation to others to give thanks.
Use the thanksgiving format (see attachment) often to structure your prayers about difficult issues where you have seen God’s deliverance. Consider sharing your thanksgiving with others.
Below is the video we didn’t get to this week. It is about imagery used by the prophets.
