A History of African American Christianity, week 1
Beginnings:
Long before 1619, Christian European pro-slavery views developed and became accepted, coinciding with imperial expansion and economic interests.
In the American colonies, anti-slavery arguments were few.
Efforts to evangelize African Americans, after a few early conversions, had a breakthrough in the Great Awakening of the 1740s. After this, converted Blacks began to speak up for themselves.
